Knowing how and where your home is wasting energy is the first step in making your home more efficient and comfortable. A CozyHome energy audit is a series of diagnostic tests and visual inspections to find where your home is wasting energy. Our energy experts are trained and certified Building Analysts through the Building Performance Institute. Along with state of the art equipment, they can quickly and accurately identify where your home is wasting energy. The following tests and inspections are included in a $99 home energy audit:
Services
Duct Testing:
Improperly installed, designed, or poorly sealed duct systems can be a large energy loss in your home. Every joint and seam that is not properly sealed within a duct system is a potential leak where conditioned air is escaping to the outdoors. This can be very costly over time. Through diagnostic testing using a blower door and a pressure pan our technicians can determine how leaky your duct system is and pinpoint where the leaks are.
Insulation inspecting:
Poor construction practices over the years have resulted in many homes being improperly insulated. Insulation acts as a blanket for your home. Often times insulation is improperly installed making it perform very poorly. Through the use of a thermal imaging camera and visual inspections we can locate improperly insulated walls, ceilings and floors in your home.
Combustion Appliance Testing:
Poisonous carbon monoxide gas from combustion appliances inside a home can pose a serious health risk to occupants. Combustion testing ensures not only that your appliances are working as efficiently as possible, but also safely. Our technicians test for proper venting, excessive carbon monoxide levels, and potential backdrafting. Safety is our number one priority.
Blower Door Testing
Houses need a certain amount of fresh air to ensure adequate air quality. However, most houses are much leakier than they need to be. In order to test how leaky a house is, a blower door is used. Combined with ventilation requirements we can determine exactly how leaky your home is and find where those leaks are occurring. (blower door image)
Infrared (thermal imaging) scanning
Infrared (also called thermal imaging) cameras show a detailed picture of surface temperatures of walls, ceilings, floors and other areas where energy leaks occur. These powerful tools help us to find air leaks as well as gaps in insulation behind walls.
Available Rebates:
After you have an energy audit, your local utility companies will pay up to 75% of the cost of eligible energy upgrades to your home. FAQs:
Why should I get a home energy audit?
A home energy audit is like a doctor’s check up for your home. In order to know what medicine to take, you need to have a diagnosis. Likewise in order to make your home healthier and more efficient, you need to know what the problems are. Through state of the art diagnostic testing, visual inspections and computer energy modeling, a home energy audit can pinpoint exactly where your home is losing energy and costing you money.
How much does it cost?
A comprehensive home energy audit is only $99 for APS, and SRP customers in Arizona. The price includes diagnostic testing, thermal imaging, visual inspection and energy modeling of your home. Normally $299, the local utility companies encourage homeowners to save energy through offsetting $200 of the energy audit cost, reducing the cost to the customer to only $99.
I have rooms in my house that are cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Can this be fixed?
Yes! Energy efficient improvements have a direct correlation to comfort in the home. Often times when we speak with a customer about an uncomfortable room we can quickly identify the culprit. Inadequate or missing insulation, restricted or disconnected duct lines, pressure imbalances are some of the problems often associated with uncomfortable rooms.
I have a newer house, shouldn’t it already be efficient?
Yes, it SHOULD be more efficient than an older home due to improved building codes over time. However, even newer homes built with more efficient energy codes are susceptible to poor construction techniques. We have found houses that are less than five years old with serious energy problems such as entire rooms missing insulation. Newer homes also tend to have more architectural details such as coffered ceilings, differing ceiling heights, and recessed lighting which are common problem areas of energy loss. You do not know how a house is performing unless it has had an energy audit performed on it.
I know my house isn’t very efficient and I would like to have an energy audit but I’m afraid how expensive it is going to be to fix the problems.
Many of our customers are surprised at how affordable energy upgrades can be. Our recommendations are based on what is most cost effective for you and your home. We won’t recommend doing something that will not have a good return on your investment. And the best part is there are rebates available from the local utility companies that will pay up to 75% of the cost!
Should I replace my windows?
Not yet. Although windows can save energy, they are typically expensive to replace. The high replacement cost offsets the savings and can make the payoff time quite long. About 95% of the time there are much more cost effective improvements than replacing windows. Having an energy audit performed on your home along with the included energy modeling report will pinpoint the most cost effective improvements for your home, then you can decide about those new windows.
How much will I save on my utility bills?
Savings really vary with each homes specific problems and energy usage. Our energy modeling software can predict the savings for the recommendations we make specific to your home. Typical savings are in the 20-50% range.
Are there rebates available to help pay for the improvements?
Yes! The local utility companies offer generous incentives to help you make your home more efficient. They will pay up to 75% of the cost for qualifying measures like attic insulation, duct sealing, air sealing and shade screens. See available rebates.
Do you do make the energy improvements?
Yes, our installation crews are specifically trained in proper weatherization and building science practices to make sure the job is done right the first time.
